On Saturday, November 9, two Century Youth Football Association (CYFA) Teams played Championship games! Here are the details:
For the first time in the history of Century Football, a Jaguar team has won a championship! Coach Drew Mendrygal's Varsity Jaguars dominated the Molalla Indians at Tigard High School on Saturday evening, avenging one of their regular season losses and securing CYFA's first TVYFL Championship! Led by Nathan Poff's stunning 4 TD, 200 yard rushing performance, the Jags capped off their scoring with a 35 yard TD pass from Jacob Conover to Izzy Healy and a late TD run by Tracy Nichols. The Jags defense locked down Molalla's outstanding Matthew Dungey and actually led by the TVYFL maximum 35 points early in the fourth quarter. Molalla, the #1 seed in the playoffs, beat Century earlier in the season 38-28, but struggled throughout the game to score against a defense that was seemingly everywhere on Saturday.
The Varsity Jags finished 7-3 this season, Winners of the Harrison Valley Division Championship!
CENTURY 5/6 TEAL SCARES SHERWOOD BLACK,
COMES UP SHORT, 27-12
Coach Hensley's 5/6 Teal Jaguars faced off against Sherwood 5/6 Black at Hare Field on Saturday. Century came into the game 6-2-1, while Sherwood came in with a flawless 9-0 record. Earlier in the season, Sherwood Black had dominated Coach Hensley's Jags, beating them 35-6 behind an enormous line.
Coach Hensley's Jaguars battled all game long and had Sherwood sweating it at halftime with only a 1 point lead (7-6). As the game wore on, Sherwood's line did enough to put some points on the board and ended up winning the game 27-12. Coach Hensley's staff did an excellent job game planning against one of the most dominant teams in the TVYFL this season. They end the season 6-3-1.
Thank you all for playing this season and we look forward to seeing you next year.
Sherwood High School, November 8, 2014-
With an undefeated season hanging in the balance and a championship on the line, Century Youth Football’s JV Jaguars made championship football a tradition at Century for the first time, beating the Molalla Indians 19-7 to secure CYFA’s second consecutive league championship!
Led by rushing touchdowns from RB Eddie Hensley and QB Shane Neal, the JV Jaguars jumped out to a 13-0 lead in the first quarter and extended their lead to 19-0 on a 50+ yard pass from Neal to WR Chance Sparks. The 19 points were all the Jags would need to ice the game and secure another TVYFL division championship for CYFA.
The tough Molalla Indians fought back in the second half, fueled by a passing onslaught that kept the Jags guessing and led to a touchdown in the third quarter. In the end though, the Jags defense, led by DL Anthony Taylor and LB Justice Chambers, proved too tough for the Indians, ending Molalla’s last two drives with an interception and a game ending sack.
The win gives Head Coach Hensley and his staff a perfect 10-0 season, the first in Century history. Hensley’s team has a combined record of 16-3-1 over the past two seasons and his 5/6 team came up just short of a championship last season against Sherwood.
“Our goal here at CYFA is to teach our kids how to play competitive, championship football against the same teams they will play in high school,” said Century Youth Football President Ed Hensley. “As our teams move on to Century, success and a winning attitude will lead to an improved, winning culture at the high school level.”
Since becoming a part of the TVYFL in 2010, Century Youth Football Association has appeared in 4 TVYFL Championship games, winning in 2013 and 2014 against Molalla, while losing championships to Westview in 2012 and Sherwood in 2013. The two championships secured by CYFA are the first two championships any football program in the Century Area has won since Century opened in the late 90’s.
